Logger

Overview

The Logger is a field data entry tool. It is designed to be flexible, with customizable tables, schema, and dictionaries. It also includes live validation to help speed up entry while highlighting potential inconsistencies.

Logger data can be stored in your current Genesis file (.gnft) or in an external database such as Microsoft Access (.mdb, .accdb). Logged data can also be displayed in 3D.

The workflow supports team collaboration: each user can log in their own Genesis workspace, then import data from other Genesis sources when needed.

Setup

  1. Open Logger or Logger Tables from the Home ribbon.
  2. Configure the database connection.
  3. Confirm to create or connect logger tables.

By default, Genesis proposes storing logger data in the current .gnft file.

If you choose an Access database, keep the Access file in a stable relative location to the .gnft file to avoid connection issues.

When a new logger setup is created, Genesis generates:

  • Default logger tables
  • Default dictionary values
  • Default quick-access table buttons

Logger Tables

Default/fixed logger tables are protected. Core fields in those tables are also protected. Other fields and user tables can be added, edited, or removed according to your workflow.

The logger interface automatically adapts to the active table schema.

Logger Tables window commands

  • Import… - Import data into the selected table.
  • Export… - Export data from the selected table.

  • New Table… - Create a new logger table.
  • Fixed Tables - Create or restore standard logger base tables.

Validate

  • Selected Tables - Run validation for selected fixed tables.

Settings

  • Quick Access… - Configure quick-access table buttons and their order.
  • Validation… - Configure logger validation behavior.
  • Logging… - Configure data entry properties (including automatic To interval behavior).

Generate

  • Drill Hole Log Report… - Generate a drill hole log report from logger data.

Dictionary

Text fields can use a dictionary to standardize values and speed up entry. When a field has dictionary values, the input behaves as a selectable lookup list.

You can open dictionary management from:

  • Logger Tables > Edit > Dictionary…
  • Logger window > Dictionary…

Dictionary management supports:

  • Selecting table and field
  • Setting an optional associated field (auto-fill linked values)
  • Importing dictionary values from CSV
  • Exporting dictionary values to CSV

Logging Window

The logging window is the main entry interface. It is organized into three areas.

Logging Window

1) Top-left: hole and table selectors

  • Select the active hole and table from drop-down lists.
  • Use the ... buttons to open ordered selection dialogs.

2) Middle: quick-access tabs

  • Quick-access tabs switch directly to configured tables.
  • You can configure them in Logger Tables > Settings > Quick Access….
  • Up to the first 9 quick-access tabs also support F1 to F9 shortcuts.

3) Top-right: navigation and row actions

Navigation commands:

  • First row
  • Previous row
  • Next row
  • Last row

Row action commands:

  • Remove - Delete selected row(s). For non-collar tables, deleted rows can be recovered from the recycle bin.
  • Update - Update the currently selected row.
  • Add - Add a new row from current form values.
  • Duplicate - Duplicate the selected row.
  • Recycle Bin - Recover deleted rows.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Ctrl + Enter - Add row
  • Ctrl + S - Update row
  • Ctrl + - - Remove row
  • Ctrl + Home - First row
  • Ctrl + End - Last row
  • Ctrl + Up Arrow - Previous row
  • Ctrl + Down Arrow - Next row
  • F1 to F9 - Switch to quick-access tables (if configured)

Data Entry Form

The form displays fields from the active table schema.

  • Live validation runs while you work.
  • Invalid fields are highlighted and provide an explanation tooltip.
  • Validation warnings inform you about issues (for example interval overlap or limits) but do not necessarily block save actions.

Additional behavior:

  • For interval tables, default From values continue from current max depth.
  • If automatic interval length is enabled, To is auto-calculated.
  • Dictionary-linked fields can auto-fill associated values.

Collars Table Special Behavior

The Collars table is the entry point for hole creation.

  • Add or rename holes in this table.
  • If Completed is checked for a hole, data entry for that hole is locked in other fields until unchecked.
  • Deleting a collar also deletes associated data in related logger tables.

Grid Data Area

The lower grid displays data for the current table and hole.

  • Select a row to load it into the form.
  • Use it to review existing entries before update/add actions.
  • Sorting and multi-row selection are supported for faster review and cleanup workflows.
  • Right-click commands are available on selected rows (for example Split on interval rows and Duplicate).

Import and Export

Logger data can be imported or exported at different levels:

  • Global import/export from ribbon commands (all logger tables)
  • Table-level import/export from Logger Tables (selected table)

After import, review the generated import/validation output.

Overwrite and Append behavior

Import can be controlled with Overwrite and Append options:

  • Overwrite only: Re-import existing holes by replacing existing matching data. Does not create new holes.
  • Append only: Import only new holes not already present. Does not replace existing holes.
  • Both enabled: Existing matching data can be replaced and new holes can be added.
  • Both disabled: Existing data is cleared, then imported data is loaded.

3D Display

Logger tables set as visible in the table list are displayed in 3D.

Display control follows the same general behavior as other custom tables in Genesis.
