Implicit Envelopes

An implicit envelope is a mesh envelope generated from mineralized intervals, then shaped into a smooth 3D result. It is designed to create complex geometries quickly while keeping strong control through manual editing.

Compared with workflows that rely on global distance-based interpolation only, this approach focuses on interval linking and editable triangulation. In practice, this helps reduce common artifacts such as local over-inflation or unrealistic constrictions between control intervals.

Create an implicit envelope

  1. In an interval set, right-click a mineralized interval.
  2. Select Generate Implicit Envelope…
  3. If the selected interval has a tag, Genesis can ask whether to use only that tag.

Result behavior:

  • A new implicit envelope is created in the Implicits group.
  • If automatic creation cannot complete a valid result directly, Genesis opens the envelope in edit mode so you can finish the structure manually.

Open edit mode

To edit an implicit envelope:

  1. Double-click the envelope.
  2. Select Edit Envelope…

Implit Env Architecture

By default, you start in model-link editing, where nodes represent intervals and links represent triangulation connections.

Implicit envelope geometry is controlled by links between intervals. The final surface is generated from triangles, so triangulation choices strongly affect the result.

Important practical points:

  • Different triangulations can produce very different folds.
  • Automatic triangulation generally minimizes fold/refold artifacts, but it may still require geological adjustment.
  • Manual link editing is often necessary to match local geological reality.

Editing modes and commands

Double-click empty space while editing to open the context menu.

General display and setup commands

  • Meshing Properties… - opens all automatic generation and post-processing settings.
  • Display Properties… - adjusts editing display sizes (node and link visibility).
  • Display Model Links - shows model-link editing view.
  • Display Border Links - shows border-link editing view.
  • Display User Links - shows user-defined interval and triangle editing view.
  • Erase Links - removes selected links.
  • Add Links - creates a link by selecting two nodes.
  • Erase All Node Links - removes all links connected to a selected node.
  • Restore All Node Links - restores automatic links on a selected node while keeping forced links.
  • Reset All Node Links - restores automatic links and clears forced links on a selected node.

Fast-mode variants are available when Home > Fast Mode is enabled (for example, Add Links (Fast)).

Validation shortcuts in fast operations:

  • Enter: validate
  • Escape: cancel/exit

Three link states are used during editing:

  • Automatic links - generated by automatic triangulation.
  • Erased automatic links - automatic links explicitly removed by the user.
  • Forced links - links explicitly added by the user.

Border editing

Switch to Display Border Links to edit envelope borders.

Available commands:

  • Add/Erase links - same behavior as model-link editing.
  • Rotate Node - modifies border-node direction and length controls.

Rotate Node is not available in fast mode.

User geometry lets you build custom structures beyond automatic model links.

Create editable user intervals

(Available outside fast mode)

  • Add Interval Duplicate - selects existing intervals as user-editable duplicates.
  • Add Interval (by line) - creates a virtual interval from two consecutive intervals.

Switch to Display User Links, then use:

  • Add triangle - creates a triangle from three selected user intervals.
  • Delete triangle - removes a selected user triangle.
  • Edit Intervals - interactively repositions and resizes virtual/user intervals.

For a user interval, Properties… includes:

  • Use user position - keeps manual orientation/position.
  • Use user length - keeps manual interval length.

If disabled, Genesis uses interpolation from the parent intervals.

Meshing Properties… controls automatic linking, meshing, and post-processing.

Intervals Linking

  • Maximum Intervals Distance - maximum distance allowed for automatic linking.
  • Maximum Dihedral Angle - maximum angular difference allowed between linked intervals.
  • Border Size - border extension size (0 means no border).
  • Spline Border - applies curved border behavior (available when border size is non-zero).

Meshing

  • Mesh Concavity - controls minimum concavity detail captured in the mesh.
  • Mesh Curvature - smooths/curves mesh edges.

Implicit Meshing

Lower concavity values typically preserve finer details but increase triangle count and processing time.

Limits

  • Substracted Envelopes - envelopes removed from the result.
  • Intersected Envelopes - envelopes used to clip the result by intersection.

These operations are post-processing steps and can be time-consuming on large meshes.

Empty Holes

  • Remove Empty Holes - creates cylindrical removals around empty drillholes.
  • Empty Holes Radius - cylinder radius.
  • Use Mid-Distance - adapts radius based on local mid-distance when smaller than the configured radius.
  • Empty Holes Resolution - vertical ring spacing used to trace hole geometry.

Final Remeshing

  • Remesh All - performs a final remesh after post-processing (limits/empty holes).
  • Concavity Factor - factor applied to the initial meshing concavity during final remeshing.

Valid range for Concavity Factor is 0.1 to 1.0.

Practical recommendations

  • Start with automatic creation, then refine links where geometry is geologically sensitive.
  • Use Erase All Node Links only when a node should be excluded from automatic triangulation behavior.
  • Apply post-processing options (limits, empty holes, remesh) after main geometry is stable, because they can increase processing time.
