Planned Holes

Overview

Planned holes are used to design future drilling from surfaces.

In GENESIS, a planned hole is stored as a GeoLine with:

  • exactly 2 points (collar and end point)
  • the first point snapped to a surface

Because planned holes are GeoLines, they are managed in the GeoLine dialog (name, path/folder, colors, tag, comment, import/export, properties).

Create a Planned Hole

  1. Select a visible surface (surface type, not solid).
  2. In plan or section view, create a hole from that surface location.
  3. The Hole Planner Properties dialog opens.

Hole Planner Methods

The End of hole setting supports three methods:

1) Compute From Target

Use a target object (typically a prism/solid target selection) to orient the hole.

  • Collar stays snapped on the selected surface.
  • Azimuth/dip are computed from collar-to-target geometry.
  • Exceeding Length can extend beyond the target intercept.

2) Compute From Angle

Define hole direction manually:

  • Azimuth
  • Dip
  • Length

The end point is computed from those parameters.

3) Use Specified Coordinate

Set the end directly with:

  • End X
  • End Y
  • End Z

Core Properties You Can Edit

From Edit > Properties… on planned-hole GeoLines:

  • Hole name
  • Surface association
  • Collar color and line color
  • Tag
  • Description
  • End-of-hole method and related parameters

For multi-selection edits, GENESIS lets you choose what to modify (surface/color/tag/description) without forcing all fields.

Important Behavior

  • Hole name must be unique.
  • Surface selection is required.
  • Collar Z is controlled by the snapped surface (collar is projected to surface elevation).
  • Planned-hole geometry is recomputed when method/parameters change.

Import and Export (Hole Trace)

Planned holes can be imported/exported as Hole Trace files from the GeoLine dialog:

  • Import > From Hole Trace
  • Export > As Hole Trace

Hole Trace fields

Typical fields include:

  • HoleName
  • x, y, z (collar)
  • Azimuth, Dip, Length
  • Zone (tag)
  • Description
  • Surface

Surface requirement on import

Imported planned holes must snap to a surface at collar XY.

If no matching surface is available, GENESIS can create one from imported collars and then snap holes to it.

Where to Manage Planned Holes

Use the GeoLine list to:

  • organize planned holes in folders
  • rename and classify by tag
  • edit display style (color/width/show)
  • edit properties in batch
  • import/export hole traces

Practical Tips

  • Keep one consistent surface per planning campaign when possible.
  • Use tags/zones to group planned holes by target area or drilling phase.
