Layers

Overview

Layers help you organize project content by workflow, domain, or interpretation stage. A common use is separating working objects from final validated objects.

How Layers Work

  • By default, if no layer is used, all objects are visible.
  • Once layers are created, visibility can be filtered by active layer selection.
  • You can keep multiple layers active at the same time.
  • If all layers are unchecked, GENESIS shows all objects again.

Open the Layers Window

  1. Go to the View panel in the ribbon.
  2. Click the Layers check button.

In the Layers window, right-click to open layer actions:

  • Create an empty layer.
  • Create a layer from currently visible objects.
  • Rename or delete a layer.
  • Activate or deactivate layers using checkboxes.

Add or Remove Objects From Layers

  1. Open the related object dialog list.
  2. Select one or more objects.
  3. Right-click and choose Add to Layer or Remove from Layer.

Dialog List Layer Filter Button

When layers are used in a project, a third button appears in the bottom-left area of dialog lists:

  • Pressed: shows only objects from active or current layer filtering.
  • Unpressed: shows all objects, regardless of layer filtering.
  • Create separate layers for interpretation, review, and final deliverables.
  • Keep naming consistent (for example: Work, QAQC, Final).
  • Activate only the layers needed for the current task to reduce visual clutter.
  • Use layer filters before exporting maps or screenshots.
