Block Grid

Overview

The default block grid is a project-wide reference grid used as the starting point for block model creation. Defining it early improves consistency across modeling, section generation, and estimation workflows.

Why It Matters

  • Keeps block model setup consistent across users and sessions.
  • Reduces manual setup when creating new block models.
  • Provides a clear 3D reference volume for planning model extents.

Where to Access Block Grid Tools

  1. Open the Display tab in the ribbon.
  2. Use the Block Grid controls.
  3. Open the dropdown (small arrow) for generation and display options.

Set Block Grid From Envelope

Generate the default grid from one or more selected envelopes so selected geometry fits inside the resulting grid extent.

Set Block Grid From Block Model

Copy grid definition from an existing block model and apply it as the project default.

Set Block Grid From File

Detect grid definition from a CSV block file containing block positions.

Supported use:

  • Regular block models
  • Sub-block models

Additional import controls include:

  • Rotated block model flag
  • Rotation angle
  • Rotation origin (X, Y, Z)
  • Origin convention (corner or center)

View Settings

Open full block grid settings and transformation options, including:

  • Grid origin
  • Block size (X, Y, Z)
  • Index ranges and coordinate ranges
  • Rotation controls

Display Properties

Control how the default block grid is drawn in 3D, including:

  • Needle display and direction
  • Transparent cube display
  • Cube color and transparency

Automatic Behavior

After data import, GENESIS can initialize a default block grid if no project grid exists yet. This gives you a working baseline before manual refinement.

  1. Define or import the default block grid early.
  2. Validate grid size and extent against your geological model limits.
  3. Apply project rotation settings if required.
  4. Use display properties to visually verify orientation and coverage.
  5. Keep one approved default grid for team-wide consistency.

Practical Notes

  • The default block grid is a starting point; individual block models can still use different grids.
  • If your project includes rotated data sources, verify origin convention (corner vs center) during file-based setup.
  • Recheck grid settings before estimation and final reporting.
